Data Handling and Recording by Laser

This article introduces the second group of contributions to the special issue of Optica Acta on ‘Optics at Philips in Hamburg’. These papers deal with opto-electronic interfaces for sequential and parallel modulation, optical interaction with matter for remanent and reversible storage along with concepts and designs of opto-electronic systems, highlighting physical and technological progress required to marry optical techniques with present-day system objectives.
