Comparison between the SPEC method and Value Analysis for an aid in preliminary design of products

Nowadays, system designers are somewhat helpless during the first stages of the design process (definition of the organic architecture during the top down stage of the « V » cycle). Indeed, they ignore if they go in a good direction (defined by the specification chart) for the different envisaged system alternatives. The SPEC method, that authors contribute to develop since several years, takes into account uncertainty inherent to this primary stage in order to propose supervision indicators (in terms of satisfactions and risks) and redesign/optimization means based upon a system/project stakeholders’ satisfaction model. For a good understanding of the interest of these design tools, we compare them with those of a conventional Value Analysis approach, for several design aid functionalities and through an industrial case study.
