OPTIMISINGTHE RATINGOFTHE UPQCFOR APPLYINGTO THE FAULTRIDE THROUGH ENHANCEMENT OFWIND GENERATION

TheUnified PowerQuality Conditioner (UPQC)isacombination ofashuntandaseries compensator cascaded viaa DC link capacitor whichworksonthecombined principle ofactive filtering anddynamic voltage restoration. Therefore, theUPQC canbeapotential solution tothegridintegration problems associated withfixed speed windgenerators including reactive powercompensation andfault ride through capability. Thehardware design oftheUPQCcanbemade morecost effective byproper selection oftherating oftheindividual compensators oftheUPQC.Itisshowninthepaper that theapplication ofafixed capacitor canlower thecostoftheUPQCfurther, without compromising theperformance. Thefixed capacitor shares thereactive powerloadwiththeshunt compensator andtheoverall rating oftheUPQC is reduced. Theproposed scheme also helps inreducing thepowerloss occurring inthepowerelectronic switches ascurrent conduction oftheswitches isreduced. Simulation results areprovided inthepaper tosupport thetheory.
