Acceleration of successive projection method in the synthesis of phased array antennas via basis function transformations

An approach is developed to accelerate the computation of successive projection method (SPM) for the fast synthesis of phased array antennas to radiate contoured radiation. The approach, instead of using the radiation of each antenna element as field basis function to span the field pattern, construct a new set of field basis function that exhibits narrow beam spot. Since in practical applications the area under synthesis is relatively small, the proposed approach has advantages of using less basis functions. It is found that only a small number of basis functions are sufficient to synthesize the radiation pattern, and make the present approach very fast.
