To overcome the limitations of existing manufacturing execution systems the PABADIS’PROMSIE project aims at the development of a flexible agent-based architecture. The paper at hand introduces this new PABADIS’PROMISE architecture based on a GAIA role model description. It starts with a short reflection of requirements and functionalities in focus of the approach and continues with a comprehensive description of the most important elements of the role model. This includes a detailed overview about functionalities and distribution of responsibilities. The important feature of enabling different strategies for the implementation of a PABADIS’PROMISEsystem and thus providing the possibility of adaptation to different needs of production systems will be discussed. Finally aspects with respect to the instantiation of roles, considering some selected entities are given.
