The paper addresses the simulation of large amplitude non-linear ship motions by hybrid, digital-analogue computing tools. The emulation of analog computing is herein accomplished by use of SIMULINK, a special module within the well known MATLAB software package. A series of classical problems of ship motion dynamics in a seaway, particularly the non-linear modeling of the roll motions of an intact and damaged ship in beam seas, the simulation of ship capsize due to parametric excitation in following seas and the coupled sway-roll-yaw motions in oblique seas, are systematically investigated and the obtained results are compared with available experimental data and numerical results obtained from the application of a relevant frequency domain seakeeping code. The suggested hybrid approach proves to be an efficient and powerful tool for addressing highly non-linear ship motion phenomena, particularly for assessing the probability of capsize of intact and damaged ships in waves and for simulating large amplitude ship motions in high seas.
