Joint power estimation and modulation classification using second- and higher statistics

Previously developed techniques for modulation classification have assumed that both the signal and noise power are known. However, the signal or noise power estimations require that modulation type is known. To solve the problem, this paper introduces a method for joint power estimation and modulation classification (JPEMC), whose key point is employing the relationships between the second- and higher moments of received signal and signal and noise power. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of modulation classification of JPEMC and indicate that the power estimation can be used by later demodulators.
