Design on An UWB Antenna in the Vehicular Shark-fin Housing on the Roof of a Car

An omni-directional Ultra Wide Band (UWB) antenna which is installed in shark-fin housing on the roof of a car is designed for Intelligent Transportation System. This UWB planar monopole antenna consists of a modified monopole antenna and parasitic strip feeding structure, which can generate a bandwidth from 2.6GHz to 5.0GHz, in a limited size of 31.5mm × 38.2mm × 1.6mm. A moderate gain, which is better than 4.4dBi, is obtained. It is easily fabricated from a printed circuit board and a metal sheet with low-cost process and materials. The antenna characteristics have been optimized to confirm the possibility for use of UWB locating in automotive applications.
