Estimating population size for capture-recapture data when capture probabilities vary by time, behavior and individual animal

In this paper we explore the problem of finding an estimator of population size in closed t—sample capture—recapture models in which time and behavior; time, behavior and heterogeneity may affect the capture probabilities. A general estimation procedure via conditional sample coverage is given which does not depend on any assumptions about the form of distribution of capture probabilities. A real data example is given for illustration and a simulation study is presented which investigates the behavior of the proposed estimators. Finally, a discussion is given with recommendations on estimators to be used in practice
