MANEUVERABILITY OF A SHIP HAVING SMALL LENGTH-BEAM RATIO-SCALE EFFECT AND CONFIRMATION OF ITS ACTUALIZATION

As a part of serial studies on the stocky hull form, the maneuverability of a newly designed ship characterized by a smaller L/B ratio of 5.0 has been investigated by IHI. In order to detect the scale effect on maneuverability and to accurately predict the actual performances of a ship subjected to the scale effect, two large 30 m models, one for a conventional V.L.C.C. now in service and the other a newly designed U.L.C.C., have undergone various tests at sea. Systematic model tests with geosim small models have also been conducted in an experimental tank. The result of these tests reveals that the new ship, if fitted with a larger rudder, demonstrates rather superior performances compared with those of the conventional one.
