AERODYNAMIC DESIGN SENSITIVITIES BY AUTOMATIC DIFFERENTIATION

The theme is the automatic-differentiation methodology for calculating sensitivity derivatives from advanced CFD codes. Previously documented success and recent advances are discussed; the computational advantages and disadvantages of this methodology are reviewed in comparison with other well-known competing methods. The feasibility of the technology as a practical design tool is assessed in the context of its application to practical aerodynamic design problems — in particular, aircraft design.
