Geometric Stability Charts for the Centreless Grinding Process

Experiments and theoretical analyses by previous workers have shown the critical importance of the geometrical configuration on the ability to produce round workpieces. Resonances in the machine tend to worsen geometrical instability and it is therefore necessary to be able to predict geometrical instabilities in order to avoid unfavourable operating conditions. The theory presented in this paper is nearer to being rigorous than previous treatments and an improved method is demonstrated for indicating conditions of instability. Experimental results are quoted which show good correlation with the information on the stability charts.
