Shape optimization of dynamically loaded machine parts

Abstract The methods of life time estimation of dynamically loaded structures are used in order to derive an optimization strategy for such structures. An optimization method is presented which can calculate an accurate as well as producible optimum shape with the help of the finite element method and mathematical programming in relatively small CPU time. This paper considers the maximization of the crack initiation time for the following cases: forced fatigue, resonance fatigue and fatigue of parts which are loaded with multiaxially dynamic out of phase forces. Finally the paper presents the results of experiments carried out on specimens with the calculated optimum shape. The experiments show an increasing life time of the optimum shape compared with a traditional shape.
