Frequency control using fast demand response in power system with a large penetration of renewable energy sources

Recently, much attention has been paid to the integration of renewable energy into power system. However, it is concerned that the frequency fluctuation is caused by a large integration of the renewable energy. Therefore, we focused on the fast demand response system to suppress the frequency fluctuation. Controllable loads on demand side such as heat-pump-based water heater or batteries of electric vehicles (EV) are operated at a high speed in the fast demand response (Fast-DR) system to suppress the frequency fluctuation. A power system is modeled with communication delay when sending control signals from a control center to the controllable equipment on the demand side. Effectiveness of the Fast-DR was verified through digital simulation on the power system model in this research.
