DESIGN FOR PRODUCTION

This paper outlines the effects of weight, cost and reliability on design for production, and states that the objective is to maximise the production kindliness of structural units. Levels of application of this objective and the production factors influencing design are described in detail. An example of flat panel design for production is given. The paper concludes that effective implementation of design for production will depend upon such factors as information flow, organisation of design, drawing and production functions, longer lead times, estimating procedures at the tendering stage, and the analysis capability of design teams.
