A LINEAR SHIP MODEL FOR JUDGING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEERING LARGE TANKERS

Following a brief introduction to the problems of both manual and automatic steering of large ships, a criterion is developed for a linear steering model valid for small variations in rudder angle and rate of turn. Derivatives of this model are based on the Lagrangian equations of motion. They have basically the same structure as Newtonian models, but their paramaters are more clearly and accurately related to the ship's geometry. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,342.
