The simultaneous occurrence of otoconia and otoliths in four teleost fish species

Abstract Otoconia consisting of crenellated spherules of calcium carbonate previously described as occurring in lungfish and mammals have been found to occur in addition to the otolith in four species of unrelated teleosts from New Zealand waters: the tarakihi Cheilodactylus macropterus, Cheilodactylidae; red cod Pseudophycis bacchus, Moridae; leatherjacket Parika scaber, Balistidae; barracouta Thyristes atun, Gempylidae.
