On the combination of numeric and symbolic computation for implementation of KBS for process control

Discusses the use of knowledge-based systems (KBS) for monitoring an industrial production process. To implement a system able to cope with all requirements, it is necessary to combine the KBS with numeric computations. Such a system can be partitioned into four subsystems: the goal-driven part, the event-driven part, regular computations and special computations. The authors identify and discuss the purpose and the functionality of each of these. They also discuss the way the subsystems interact with each other, and how to implement such a system.<<ETX>>
