Follow this path to pollution prevention

Processes that minimize the amount of waste generated at the source are the most economical. Even in existing facilities, waste generation can be reduced by more than 30% on average, while at the same time lowering operating costs and new capital investment. This article charts a path to an effective pollution prevention (P{sup 2}) program, with particular emphasis on reducing waste generation in existing manufacturing facilities. It is based on a proven methodology used within the DuPont Co., and can be applied to both large- and small-scale problems. An example illustrates both the how-to of a pollution prevention program, as well as some of the tools and techniques available to tackle waste generation problems by looking inside the pipes and vessels.
