An Analysis of Activity Type Classification and Issues Related to the with WHom and for Whom Questions of an Activity Diary

This paper argues that the formulation and specification of activity analysis models demand better understanding of time allocation behavior that goes beyond the more recent within household analyses. The paper used data from 1,471 Pennsylvania residents to examine time allocation and the stated altruistic and self serving behavior. The survey included a two-day activity diary in which respondents report every activity they pursue. For each activity, they also report with whom the activity was completed, and for whom. Answers were sought for the following questions: Do people spend most of their time alone or with others and when during the day; Do people pursue these activities for self serving reasons or are they serving others?; Is it possible to identify relatively homogeneous groups of people with distinct character in their time allocation pattern?; and, What are some key determinants of these different patters? Paper describes survey data and provides data analysis and findings.
