Industry trends suggest a continued move towards multiple CPU personal computers. The development of a multi-threaded version of the Legion simulation software is the only way to harness the power of commodity hardware. In addition, distributed computing is an indispensable tool for tackling simulations of ever increasing size and complexity. The paper describes the development process of the multi-threaded and distributed version of the software and presents benchmark results demonstrating how the use of a multicomputer or of even a multi-core computer can greatly accelerate the speed of a pedestrian movement software.
