A computer algorithm to link a finite-element package to the CAD/CAM of cold roll-forming

Abstract The traditional design of roll-former tooling calls not only for labourious drafting techniques and hand calculations to ensure geometric accuracy, but also is extremely error-prone due to the tedious procedures involved and lack of a scientific basis for the examination of possible design options. Hence, lengthy trials are often required, with subsequent costly alterations, before full production can commence. This paper deals with a feasibility study of linking a finite-element package such as PAFEC to a CAD/CAM system for cold roll-forming.
