Emerging CCIR standards for digital TV transmission: subjective testing methodology and analysis of the results

Codec trials was to determine the performance of a small number of candidate 4:2:2 codecs in the areas of: (i) basic picture quality after a single encoding and decoding operation; (ii) picture quality after an encoding and decoding operation is followed by chromakey or slow-motion studio post processing; and (iii) the subjective impairment characteristic as a function of the digital channel error rate. In particular these tests were to assess whether the codecs could surpass acceptability thresholds laid down by the CCIR report on codec user requirements. This was a necessary condition for a system to achieve the status of a CCIR Recommendation.
