DIABETES AS A PHYSIOLOGICAL PROBLEM

SECON-D OLIVER-SHA.RPEYT LFCTURE BY PROFESSOR J. J. R1. MACLEOD. THIE second aind final Oliver-Sharpey Lecture by Profes;sor J. J. R. MACLEOD of Aberdeeni, onl " Diabetes as a physiological problem," was c li-ered at the Roy-al College of Plhysiciaius on Mayv st. T'lhe lecturer reminided hiis hearers that in hiS first lectture two days previously (Brlitislh Mledical Joitrnal, .MayV lOtil, p. 868) he had dealt witih some of the laboratory observations wlicil had receintlv beeui miade oni depanicreatized animiials, paying attenitioni particularly to the differelnce in the course of the diabetes observ=ed in fiattened and in lean animals. Diabetes was founiid to be verv mliuch more acuite in I;he former type of animal, and this in(dicated, or at least suggested, that some of the .sugar must be derived from fat. At the enid of the lectulre hle had aalluded to certain other experiments wlich ftil'llshed more direct proof that this wxas tlle case. He did not intend to go fuirther into that subject, as it had been suifficientlv canvassed r-ecenit-ly in aniother conniexioni, but u -ould turnll his attenition to a part of the suibject which lhe tbotughlt would be of increasinig interest in the next few years-namely, the mechaniismll of the control of iniisulin secretionl.
