Insect herbivory information detection by Principal Component Analysis on Electronic Nose System

In response to insect herbivory, plants synthesize and emit blends of volatile compounds from their damaged and undamaged tissues. A system comprised of computer and electronic nose could fast detect the blends of volatile of paddy rice. The method for fast detecting pest information of rice includes detecting the volatile odor, classifying volatile odor by insects, and using principal component analysis (PCA). The best opportunity for detecting pest information using electronic nose is found out, which is in a range from 15 to 36 hour after insect herbivory. The results of this experiment demonstrate electronic nose is efficient to obtain pest information of rice
