The Two Wheel Trend

The author discusses the trend towards the greater use of two-wheeled transport for economic and social reasons. This trend has been accompanied by increased accident figures of some 21%. Such increases have occurred despite advances made in design, tyre development, conspicuity and legislation on protective helmets. Other developments being evaluated are anti-locking brakes for motorcycles and an energy absorbing chest pad developed at TRRL. It is stated that only 10% of young motorcyclists obtain any form of training although there is no lack of opportunity. Finally, the author evaluates the Kawasaki Z200 motorcycle for police duties. /TRRL/
