Quantum nondemolition detection of single photons in an open resonator by atomic beam deflection

Abstract We discuss a scheme to perform quantum nondemolition (QND) detection of single optical or millimeter-band photons by observing the deflection of a beam of atoms flying close to an open dielectric resonator. Our analytical calculations take account of spontaneous emission and resonator losses.
