A LOCALIZED ROUTING SCHEME FOR LEO SATELLITE NETWORKS

On account of the varying satellite geometry and changing topology of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks, satellite resources and onboard processing capability are strictly limited and allowance has to be made for housekeeping procedures such as, among others, handoff process. In this paper, a new approach to the problem of efficient utilization of onboard processing resources using a localized routing scheme is put forward. The proposed scheme is based on modeling a LEO satellite network as a Manhattan Street Network (MSN). The proposed scheme reduces the size of routing tables, which in turn reduces the onboard processing time required for route computation and route exchange. The proposed localized scheme is tested on the Dijkstra routing algorithm. Through simulations, the proposed scheme is shown to achieve a significant reduction in computational time, whilst maintaining a comparable system performance, as compared to conventional routing algorithms.
