Introdução à visualização de informações

Information visualization corresponds to the application of interactive computer graphics techniques aiming at supporting data analysis processes by means of graphical representations that can be manipulated by the user. An information visualization technique is based on a visual representation (a picture or image) and interaction mechanisms that allow a user to manipulate it to better understand the data represented in there. The abstraction level in information visualization is high due to the fact that data do not often have a natural physical or geometric representation, or the user is not interested in raw data but needs to search for features or trends inside the data set. This paper is a short survey of this area, presenting some fundamental aspects as well as techniques that illustrate them. This paper also offers a brief discussion on interdisciplinary characteristics of information visualization.
