Laboratory Studies for the J. H. Campbell, Unit No. 3, Cooling Water Intake Design

A three-year study sponsored by the Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation was conducted to determine the overall efficiency of a full-scale angled screen demonstration facility located on the Hudson River estuary. The study was designed to assess the diversion efficiency and survival of larval and adult fish. Three angled screen approach velocities were tested. Diversion flow was maintained by two screw-impeller pumps. The angled screen demonstration facility was determined to be a highly successful physical barrier for mitigating fish impingement. Study results on ichthyoplankton indicate low overall diversion and high mortality, suggesting that fine mesh angled screens for this design are not effective for mitigating entrainment.
