Counterproliferation with Advanced Microarray Technology

In response to perceived terrorist biological threats within the United States, counterproliferation efforts have increased steadily in recent years. A variety of advanced technologies can be used to detect unknown organisms that may be potentially harmful to humans and/or the environment. However, first responders need more rapid, reliable, and accurate detection devices than are now available to detect harmful pathogens. The MAGIChip (Micro Arrays of Gel Immobilized Compounds on a Chip), a microarray-based assay that can detect and identify thousands of biological species in a matter of hours, has the capability of being one such technology.
