WAYNE G. FREDRICK This article reports a controlled experiment which used three modes of presenting grammar to eighth grade students by means of programed instruction. Although the instruction occupied only five days, Mr. Fredrick found that symbolic notation significantly helped students of all three ranges of ability and that sentence trees helped high and medium ability students but were not appropriate for low ability students.
