The future of (mathematical) music theory

I restate and amplify my argument that music theory should embrace its status as a folk psychology, and appeal to psychology as an encompassing framework within which musical phenomena which are not explicable by reference only to the musical surface may be engaged. This position opens up a new range of possibilities for the application of mathematics and computation in the study of music.
