Numerical study of the X-31 high angle-of-attack flow characteristics

The application of CFD methods to high-angle-of-attack flight regimes is studied. The X-31 configuration was chosen as the model due to its inherent designed high-angle-of-attack characteristics and capabilities, the existence of a wind tunnel database, and the ongoing flight test program. The flow characteristics of the X-31 at high angle-of-attack are presented and the CFD capability for studying the effects of canard deflection on aerodynamic control during poststall is revealed.
