Automatic dispersion equalization by monitoring extracted-clock power level in a 40-Gbit/s, 200-km transmission line

A novel receiver configuration enabling automatic dispersion equalization is proposed. An equalizer is configured with variable-dispersion, and it is shown that the optimum dispersion can be detected by monitoring the clock component of the transmitted signal after square law detection. Using this equalizer, a 40-Gbit/s transmission experiment over 200 km of dispersion shifted fibre (DSF) was successfully carried out.
