A comparison of Fourier transform and wavelet transform methods for detection and classification of faults on transmission lines

This paper presents a comparative study of the performance of Fourier transform and wavelet transform based methods for detection, classification and location of faults on high voltage transmission lines. The algorithms devised are based on Fourier transform analysis of transient current signals recorded in the event of a short circuit on a transmission line. Similar analysis is performed using multi-resolution Daubchies-8 wavelet transform and comparative merits of the two methods are discussed
