Stephen R. Smoot and Lawrence A. Rowe Computer Science Division University of California at Berkeley Berkeley, CA 94720 smoot@plateau.cs.berkeley.edu,Rowe@cs.berkeley.edu ABSTRACT Many image and video compression schemes perform the discrete cosine transform to represent images in frequency space. An analysis of a suite of images conrms the previous nding of a Laplacian distribution to model the luminance AC coe cients. This model is used in two ways: to reduce dequantization error and to speed up optimal quantization matrix generation.1
