Electrophoretic Determination of the Charge at the Liquid-Solid Interface : Relation with Conduction Phenomena

We have determined, via electrophoresis, the zetapotential at solid/non-polar liquid interfaces. The particles were either metallic (Al, Ag, Pt) or nonconducting (capacitor paper, polyethylene). The liquid was cyclohexane with its resistivity modified by the addition of an electrolyte: triisoamylammonium picrate (TiAP). The zeta-potential and thus the electric charge at the interface at thermodynamic equilibrium, are related to electrical measurements such as the apparent resistivity of the liquid, superficial conduction and ion injection by conducting0 and non-conducting electrodes.
