The Times They Are A’Changing: Dividing and Recombining Labour Through Computer Systems

Computer information systems, like systems of work organisation, are designed. Sometimes the designers are computer systems analysts working for the same company for which they are developing information systems, developing for example new inventory control programs. At other times the designers may be consultants or outside vendors who develop systems for the general public such as general accounting packages. Whatever the method of system development, computer information systems are ordered to meet certain sets of requirements and such requirements generally reflect the organisational philosophy and objectives of upper management.1
