Accurate detection of shock waves and shock interactions in two-dimensional shock-capturing solutions

Abstract This paper describes an innovative technique that is capable of automatically detecting shock-wave shapes and shock-interaction patterns by post-processing the results obtained from a shock-capturing calculation using any of the available, state-of-the-art, shock-detection techniques. This new technique makes use of the Hough transform, the least-squares fit and the fuzzy logic to post-process the data supplied by classical shock-detection techniques; it not only allows to significantly enhance the quality of the extracted shock-fronts, but, even more importantly, allows to recognize the different types of shock-shock and shock-wall interactions that may occur within the flowfield.
