Discussion on Shanghai Engineering Geological Division

Based on an analysis of the existing approach to engineering geology in the Shanghai area,this paper concludes that the use of landforms as the principle element of the classification system used to characterize subsurface conditions should be replaced by a system based on the underlying Holocene stratigraphy.Consequently,this paper establishes a basic soil sequence table for each engineering geological division,and suggests possible methods for defining further subdivisions.Through this,we hope to stimulate wide discussion amongst engineering geologists regarding this problem,with the aim of agreeing a new scheme,based on stratigraphic principles,with which to define engineering geological conditions in Shanghai as soon as possible.
