RIDING ON THE EDGE: AN EXPERIENCE OF ENGINEERING FOR CYCLISTS IN ADELAIDE

The Australian Road Rules, Australian Standards and various guidelines and Codes of Practice provide the framework within which traffic engineers operate. This paper describes how well this framework functions for bicycles. Adelaide City Council has recently renewed its commitment to cyclists and pedestrians, leading to a need for higher consideration for cyclists in traffic treatments throughout the City. The paper presents case studies, which illustrate the difficulties of applying the current standards, codes and regulations principally formulated on the motor vehicles to bicycles and to the problems of achieving "best practice" results in an Australian context.
