This paper describes recent studies on the SSVS (Super Smart Vehicle System) and, in particular, the placement of each system relating to IVHS in Japan, the objectives of the SSVS, the recent studies, and the measures for the materialization. The SSVS is the future intelligent driving system for 20 to 30 years from now with the objectives of both safety and efficiency of automobile driving/traffic taking account of the aging society and the environmental protection. The main theme of the SSVS is AVCS, which will provide substantial solutions in order to attain the objectives. The recent studies on the SSVS include AVCS for urban streets, AVCS for expressways, vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems, intelligent logistics, APTS-related systems, and test sites and facilities.
