DB Energie GmbH is a member of the Deutsche Bahn Group, whose job it is to supply power to drive trains to railway operators, especially alternating current at the specific railway frequency of 16.7 Hz, direct current and diesel fuels. For that purpose, it operates its own nationwide grid with a length of 7728 km and a power rating of 3044 MW. Coupling this grid to the general 50-Hz public grid is now being implemented more and more with frequency converters. Thanks to new technical concepts, it is now possible to reduce the size of 15-kV switching panels, and substations are now controlled by modules that comply with the IEC 61850 standard. Controlling the operational catenary network at 15 kV and the railway supply grid at 110 kV has now been concentrated on just eight locations.
