Allocation, Parameter Configuration and Simulation of PSS Based on Small Signal Stability Analysis

In AC/DC interconnected power system, the low frequency power oscillation caused by low damping is a serious issue. Based on the analysis of small signal stability, this paper studies the eigenvalue and the correlation factor of power system, and puts forward the method of adding damping to restrain the low frequency oscillation by adopting PSS properly. The allocation of PSS and its parameter configuration in frequency domain are also discussed. And small signal time domain analysis is very useful in testing the power system's stability. A 3-machine AC/DC interconnected power system is simulated in this paper, and the simulation results show that if the PSS has reasonable parameters and is allocated properly, the system damping will increase significantly. Consequently the corresponding weak oscillation modes will be improved greatly, with better dynamic characteristics of the power system as well.
