When the steel frame is subject to horizontal loads, the shear deforomation occurs in joint panels and the horizontal stiffness gets lower, and the lateral deformation as well as angular displacement of the story will become larger. This paper analyzes the behavior of steel frames with different thickness of joint panel under the static or dynamic loading. The calculating results indicate that the lateral deformation and angular displacement of the story can be reduced by increasing the thickness of joint panels and we should pay attention to that when a veolent earthquake occurs and that most joint panels of the frame have been in the elastic - plastic states and the angular displacement of the story will become even larger, which may make the steel frame failure.
