GOVERNMENT‐FUNDED R&D: SOME REGIONAL ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS

Governmental influences on technological change, unlike private-sector efforts, have received little attention from geographers. A major influence in a regional context is the direct government spending on R&D conduted by private firms. This paper focuses on the agglomeration and linkage effects of federal R&D spending in the United States, isolating defense and space R&D as the largest single sources of federal funds. The empirical findings suggest that federally funded R&D takes place in different agglomerations than private R&D, and that relatively few places are linked into the network of R&D subcontracts.
