ETÄLÄ - Virtual Reality Assisted Telepresence System for Remote Control and Maintenance

Abstract The Etala virtual reality assisted remote maintenance system is a multimedia communications tool between an expert and the maintenance people working at a remote site. Augmented reality is used to visualise the state of the remote system on top of real-time video image received from the site. The expert communicates with the maintenance people with speech, pictures, drawings, whiteboards, by pointing with a remotely controlled laser pointing/measuring device. He uses the virtual model of the mechatronic system to find data and documents about the various components and the total assembly
