DYNAMIC ROUTE GUIDANCE SYSTEMS AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PRIORITY SYSTEMS IN UTMS

Traffic control systems have already been introduced in all parts of Japan and Japan can be said to lead developed countries in the adoption of such systems. The idea behind UTMS (Universal Traffic Management System) is to add a new infrastructure which provides two-way communication between the ground and in-vehicle units to the existing traffic control systems. It is one type of ITS, which implements a broad range of traffic control measures by individually identifying vehicles. Verification tests which will pave the way for practical application of DRGS (Dynamic Route Guidance Systems) and PTPS (Public Transportation Priority Systems), two of the six sub-systems which have been made possible through the use of two-way communication, are scheduled for the first half of 1996. This report discusses technical details and verification test plans for these two sub-systems.
