Comprehension and Text Genre: An Analysis of Secondary School Foreign Language Readers

FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, THE STUDY OF SECond language reading has received much attention in recent years. ' Three of these reasons are of particular interest to this study. First, communicative language teaching with its incumbent emphasis on functional materials recognizes the importance of reading. Byrnes contends, for example, that "authentic texts are still the most preferable resource. Only by helping learners deal with authentic texts can we rees-
